Scope of License: (Type of work this license allows you to perform)
A “general contractor” means a contractor whose services are unlimited as to the type of work which he or she may do, who may contract for any activity requiring licensure under Section 489.105 F.S., and who may perform any work requiring licensure under Section 489.105 F.S. EXCEPT as otherwise expressly provided in Section 489.113 F.S.
A general contractor shall subcontract all electrical, mechanical, plumbing, roofing, sheet metal, swimming pool, and air-conditioning work, unless such general contractor holds a state certificate or registration in the respective trade category.
Apply for the License
Once you have passed the Business & Finance, Contract Administration, and Project Management exams you will be required to submit an application to the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR) along with the required documentation as stated on the application. Method of Qualification
A person will qualify for a certified license by meeting one of the following requirements:
- Four year construction-related degree from an accredited college (equivalent to three years experience) and one year proven experience applicable to the category for which you are applying.
- One year experience as a foreman and not less than three years of credits from accredited college-level courses.
- One year experience as a worker, one year experience as a foreman, and two years of credits from accredited college-level courses.
- Two years experience as a worker, one year experience as a foreman, and one year of credits from accredited college-level courses.
- Four years experience as a worker or foreman of which at least one year must have been as a foreman.
MILITARY VETERANS: A veteran will qualify for a certified license by meeting one of the following:
- Three years of military service and one year experience as a foreman applicable to the category for which you are applying.
- Two years of military service, one year experience as a foreman, and one year experience as a worker or foreman applicable to the category for which you are applying.
- One year of military service, one year experience as a foreman, and two years experience as a worker or foreman applicable to the category for which you are applying.
NOTE: You do not have to have the necessary experience before you take the exam.
- The test scores are valid for 4 years meaning you have 4 years to gain the required experience after passing the state exam.
- Three years of any accredited college credits can be used in place of construction experience regardless of the subject matter/courses.
